I run a small development company called BrightSide Digital in Kansas City. We do projects of all kinds for companies all around the world. Recently we have been doing a lot of mobile development and we outsource some of the work when appropriate. I deployed both projects to the app stores at the end of 2020 and have had some ongoing work every since.

Our main goal was to utilize nimblechapps developers to help increase the speed of development while maintaining proper code practices so the applications could scale.

Once I found them on upwork I worked with their resource manager to onboard both developers. They also assigned a project manager to each project as well who helped with communication whenever needed.

What was the team composition?

I handled all backend engineering and UX designs prior to the project's start with Nimblechapps. Once we got going I had them knock out the frontend designs and I handled the KANBAN board on Github. I also handled all QA and testing for both applications.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Both apps made it to the app store which was our goal. Now its the clients job to make the app grow and we will provide ongoing changes when needed.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Hiring Nimblechapps Ltd saved me a lot of time. It did increase my hours at night and during the day because I was communicating with them, writing tasks and code reviewing. But, I could not have done the backend and frontend code all by myself in the same amount of time it took by utilizing nimblechapps.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They were very flexible with me and allowed me to onboard two developers very quickly. Their resource manager was very professional and the developers were very knowledgable.

We had a few communication breakdowns in the beginning but that happens with any new working relationship.

The goal of the engagement has been to make sure that we could build a functional application—a product to be considered as a solid demo—within three months. We’re at the end of development, which I consider a success. Now, we’re familiar with the tools and the process to build the product. Nimblechapps Ltd also gave us extra value. Sometimes they’ve proposed ideas that we hadn’t considered.

Their management was one of the qualities I’ve enjoyed. Having worked with abroad resources before, good communication skills aren’t a given. Nimblechapps Ltd has been able to communicate, give status updates, and provide clear explanations of processes. Their team has been quick and sensitive to communication. Even when I’ve sent them a comment during the day—their night—I’ve received a response within minutes.

In summary, it has been their team's management skills. They’ve tacked the project actively rather than passively. Nimblechapps Ltd has been organized and professional. With them, you pay for one resource but end up receiving one and a quarter. Their project manager will follow up on everything, which is a bonus you won't find anywhere else.

Their invoicing system could be improved but it’s working.

Make sure you have tools for communication that are already on your side. Don’t use only e-mails to communicate. Have chat apps or other platforms to use for conferences and to exchange files quickly.
