I’m the senior digital media strategist for CableLabs. We’re a research and development organization and we provide value to our 60+ members of cable operating companies through technology. I’m responsible for out digital transformation, the digitizing process, creating content, and social media.

What challenge were you trying to address with By the Pixel?

Our company wasn’t concerned with our digital image or presence on the web. We didn’t even have the database or processing capabilities to disseminate information to our members. We brought in By the Pixel to support out overall digital transformation.  

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

First, By the Pixel modernized a few pages on our website using WordPress. They cleaned up some of the site and designed a new look and feel for the platform. They customized the platform for mobile and desktop and enabled account registration. Now we can also provide real-time data on the website. Their team also supported our internal database by shifting our API from Django to Vue.js.

On top of that, they helped with some campaign branding. We are planning a 30th-anniversary event, and By the Pixel helped create the style for the entire event. They designed a logo and created a master style guide that includes everything from the theme to social media.

What is the team composition?

Two people work on our project full-time, but the brought in a few experts in analytics, dev-ops, graphics, and branding as needed.

How did you come to work with By the Pixel?

We wanted to keep it local, so 3–4 companies nearby submitted proposals. We selected By the Pixel based on their creativity and rate.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $800,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in May 2016 and we have an ongoing relationship.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’ve seen at least a 50% increase in traffic. We also handle information in a completely different way now. Since we have the database, help desk tickets our down by 60% and we’ve dramatically decreased the time it takes to respond to inquiries. Before this project began, it took 3–5 business days because it took so much time to find information in the backend, but now it’s down to 1–3 days.

How did By the Pixel perform from a project management standpoint?

Their team is available 24/7. We have one point of contact and they’ve been really communicative—they’re even responsive when something happens to the site in the middle of the night. We usually stay in-budget, and if there are any overages, they communicate why.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re always willing to go the extra mile and want to help. Their demeanor is friendly, which makes them really easy to work with. They provide multiple options and go beyond our expectations to look at where we stand and how we view things. Additionally, UX is one of their biggest strengths.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything right now.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They often provide options that are outside your requirements because they think it will generate more interest or signups. So, be prepared to consider them fully.

I’m the director of digital marketing for Solv, a healthcare marketplace that lets users with urgent care needs make same-day or next-day appointments.

What challenge were you trying to address with By the Pixel?

We wanted to attract consumers that needed help finding urgent care and healthcare nearby. We specifically wanted to capitalize on Google algorithms to convert consumer demand into organic traffic to our platform.

What was the scope of their involvement?

By the Pixel has become our digital marketing agency. They support our directory for consumer search and help us attract urgent care providers to our platform. We create the overall demand generation or SEO strategy, and By the Pixel implements it. 

What is the team composition?

We work with 4–5 people. About 75% of the time, we have a single point of contact, but we can also reach out to individuals directly as needed.

How did you come to work with By the Pixel?

By the Pixel first worked with a digital agency that I ran. We utilized them for some outsourced work. I then hired them to develop a website for my business called UrgentCareLocation.com. By then, I was used to working with their style and trusted their database skills and program anthologies. I’ve been working with By the Pixel ever since, including after I later sold the business to Solv. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $300,000–$500,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since 2011. Our relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

By the Pixel took our website’s visitor count from zero to over a million unique users monthly before I sold the business. We continue to operate at that scale with Solv’s platform, which hosts half a million pages and has a robust tech stack. We still see strong growth thanks to By the Pixel’s work. 

They make it easy for our marketing team to adapt and respond to data; that’s why we haven’t replaced them with in-house employees. The team is highly responsive to any Google algorithm changes or technology updates. We can explore things on our platform and test new ideas based on the expertise that By the Pixel brings to the table.

How did By the Pixel perform from a project management standpoint?

We’ve had the same point person on our project since its beginning. This means we have a consistent contact that has intrinsic knowledge of what we’ve done and where things stand with our account. That kind of knowledge is invaluable for an operation like this.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their adaptability has been fantastic. We’ve made the project more challenging to them because the platform has two different tech stacks operating on a single domain. However, they’ve accommodated the two different tech teams and technologies with ease. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I hope By the Pixel has the opportunity for continued growth. That’ll create a lot of advantages for their team and future clients.

Any advice for potential customers?

Be open and honest with them. Let By the Pixel have a little freedom to exercise their knowledge and explore from a design and development standpoint.

Theresa's Fund Inc is a non-profit that has practiced in the domestic violence field sine 1992 and I am the director of this national organization.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire By the Pixel?

We concepted and launched DomesticShelters.org in 2014 with the considerable assistance of By the Pixel. We had the goal of making more people aware of the services available for those experiencing domestic violence.

We also wanted to make it faster and easier for victims of domestic violence and their friends/family, as well as program and shelter providers, to quickly find services and information best suited to their location, language and needs.

What were your goals for this project?

The goal for DomesticShelters.org was to become the first online and mobile searchable database of programs and shelters in the U.S./Canada, and a leading source of helpful tools and information for people experiencing and working to end domestic violence.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We selected By the Pixel on a referral from a friend who was working on a similar project in the for profit world and who previously ran an interactive agency that I owned. Because of our past experience, both my friend and I understood what to look for from a client perspective when selecting an interactive agency.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

By the Pixel did everything from A-Z. DomesticShelters.org did not exist when we started working with By the Pixel. The website was simply an idea. Today it is 15,000 pages deep. It ranks well on almost every domestic violence keyword. It serves 3.3 million people a year.

It is managed primarily by our layperson staff on a day-to-day basis through a custom content management system. And it includes countless complex integrations, such as one with Amazon Business to operate our automated shelter wish list program and more.

The real question here is "can you name a service that By the Pixel didn't provide?". I can't. By the Pixel has been absolutely instrumental every step of the way in the development of this game-changing online social service.

What was the team composition?

Of note, the project team has been almost unchanged since 2014. That's right, we've worked with the same people across all five years! The odds of that occurring anywhere else are slim. And the benefits of this occurring are enormous.

Both of our organizations save so much time due to the depth of knowledge -- that dates back to the first line of code -- that exists on both sides.

Our point person at By the Pixel has always been one of the three partners; a good 90% of communications have occurred through the point person and assignments are made by the point person deeper into By the Pixel.

It is a true gift to do business this way because it ensures that we are always on the same page and aren't being shuffled between project managers, account managers, creatives, specialists and developers, and don't have to wonder whether the left hand knows what the right hand is doing.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Just five years since the launch of DomesticShelters.org and it is:

• the fastest growing website in the world on the topic of domestic violence
• the second most visited website in the world on the topic of domestic violence 
• it has become a highly respected national resource that has saved and improved countless lives. These are incredible results in a short period of time.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Most impressive? That's a tough one because there are many impressive attributes. If you force me to select one, I'll go with the people. It's just a rock solid, steady, fair, efficient, hardworking, clever group of people who communicate well and deliver on commitments.

By the Pixel has been an incredible partner for our project and how we like to do business. We give By the Pixel an A+ and highly recommend them to others. Just outstanding!

Are there any areas for improvement?

None. I've never thought once in our five years of working together that we need a different agency or that there isn't a challenge that we can't figure out together. It's been an absolute pleasure.
