I was a project manager for a digital agency that I’ve since left.

What challenge were you trying to address with bPol?

We needed to replace internal developers who didn’t have the technical profiles—including with Symphony in particular—required to perform the tasks at hand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

bPol augmented our staff on multiple complex projects including a survey platform and a social platform. They worked in PHP and Symphony on the backend as well as database programs including mySQL. On the frontend, it was a mix of Bootstrap, jQuery, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React. They took over partial wireframes that were outdated and reworked them. They did all the debugging. They also provided was the DevOps support to keep some of our platforms online.

I had four developers working with me and a project manager.

How did you come to work with bPol?

A colleague of mine, who had worked with bPol before, recommended them. They had found them to be fast and reliable. We contacted them and did a first, small project with them. That went well, so we kept working together.

What is the status of this engagement?

They started working with us in December 2018, and it’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Feedback from user testing of our platforms was positive. The fact that the platform was very unreliable when they took over and that the stability increased at least a little bit was a measure of success for us.

How did bPol perform from a project management standpoint?

They performed well. The project manager responded to my questions well. I followed up on most projects from day to day myself while their project manager had more of an overview of all projects.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What distinguishes them for me is that they’re so honest. If something isn't done right or isn't working out, they'll say it. They’re proactive and solution-oriented. They have a “can-do” attitude. They won't block anything—they’ll suggest solutions. Similarly, their availability, speed, and reaction time are great.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Honestly, no. I was very happy with the way we worked together. There was only one thing that that bothered me at the time, but that was internal politics at my own agency, not them. I'm 100% happy with bPol as a partner.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They're a partner that likes to think with you. They don't just work for you; they work with you. They provide their feedback and inputs. They use their extensive knowledge and expertise to help the customer. Budgets and payments are important, but with them, it's more than just making money. They want to have an optimal working relationship and keep the internal team motivated.

bPol first developed a product information management (PIM) solution to centralize our product data. They then built new site features, improve its overall speed, and revamped its coding. They also provided support for web hosting.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The project is still in progress; the bPol remains under development, and it’s too early to observe results on the site’s new features. However, the site now has shorter load times and runs faster.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it? 

We work directly with the developer instead of a scrum master. The project has run smoothly so far, and the developer’s products work correctly.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technology.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The products can use more testing before the team delivers them to us. However, bPol is already working on improving their processes.

I’m the COO of Fasterr. We’re trying to introduce a time-tracking and invoicing application for freelancers.

What challenge were you trying to address with Unicornly?

We needed a vendor to develop our web application.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

First, we sat in front of a whiteboard and discussed the problems I wanted to solve with this software. I described my vision, and the Unicornly team asked questions and suggested alternatives. Then, we started to conceptualize the user flow. I wanted to use a template, but Unicornly sold me on their design skills. With knowledge of user psychology, they created an engaging interface with more features than I had originally requested.

With the design in place, the team developed the web application with a cloud-based backend. It’s a pretty simple system. The software lets users track their time and also generates an invoice for their work.

What is the team composition?

I worked with Luke (Co-founder & CEO, Unicornly), who acted as the project owner and UX specialist. There were two other developers, as well. The entire team was dynamic and enthusiastic.

How did you come to work with Unicornly?

I was a lecturer at a university and Luke was a Ph.D. student in the same department. In our first meeting, he was open-minded and skilled. We developed a mentorship, and I asked him to work on my project.

At this point, cloud solutions weren’t very common in Poland, and Unicornly was still fairly new. The team was booked with other projects for a while, so it took a few months to actually get started. I looked at two other companies in the meantime, but they asked for more money and didn’t use the agile methodology. Ultimately, I chose to wait for Unicornly.

How much have you invested with them?

I spent $50,000 on this project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from July 2015–December 2015.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Unicornly developed the system according to our requirements, and they maintained it for some years. They consistently added value to the product by offering suggestions and alternatives. After a final review, they determined that everything was stable. Now, we’re in control of the platform.

Our early adopters were happy with the system. They praised its speed and simple design, and they found the invoicing feature helpful. We could’ve sold the product, but we need more people on board. Ideally, we want to secure another 100,000 users over the next year.

How did Unicornly perform from a project management standpoint?

We worked in two-week sprints. It was a very practical and efficient collaboration. I always had the same contact person, and we communicated very well. It didn’t take them long to understand what we wanted to do.

They were consistently prepared for our interactions and provided progress updates regularly. We scheduled meetings to go over work and plan our next steps. Despite being in the same city, we only met in person a few times. We never felt it was necessary because the project was going so well.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their company is driven by business people with a global perspective. Every time we looked at alternate design and development strategies, they would be sure to consider our global competitors. Their global view was extremely valuable.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think they should expand their list of specialties, but I’ve already discussed this with them. They primarily focus on web-based applications, but I’d love to work with them on other systems. I recommend they increase their skills in image processing and move more into hardware-based solutions.

Any advice for potential customers?

Trust the agile approach, even though Unicornly doesn’t offer it at a fixed price. This method leaves room for changes and improvements during development. Overall, their future clients should fully trust them. Their main goal is satisfying their customers. Whenever I wasn’t happy with a feature, they fixed it immediately. They’re incredibly accommodating.

We met our aggressive net revenue growth expectations thanks to their ability to deliver. They built the platform in a highly scalable way that allowed us to grow effectively.
