I’m the director of content development for the Canadian Cancer Society. We’re a nonprofit that works in Canada supporting advocacy, research, and support services for people going through cancer.

What challenge were you trying to address with Signature Video Group?

We hired Signature Video Group to support the creation of a video profiling a 17-year clinical trial we did in partnership with a group in Kingston.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Signature Video Group has produced an eight-minute mini-documentary video for us to showcase the clinical trial. They’ve also produced shorter versions of it. The video profiles a woman who went through the clinical trial and shows the benefits and results of the trial. The trial profiled the importance and benefits of exercise after colon cancer. The trial showed a 20%–30% increase in survivorship. We’re using the video to showcase the great results and interview the researcher, the investigator, and the storyteller, and weave that story together for our donors.

We initially met with Signature Video Group to brief them on the project. From there, they provided us with a full proposal, scope, cost, and creative direction. We provided them with a brief, some information on the clinical trial, and the story. From there, they did preproduction to look at the story, discuss various shooting locations, and determine how they would put the story together on-site.

Signature Video Group did a preproduction call with the principal storyteller to get her story and speak to her. They took care of the logistics around the two days of shooting, including scheduling. They handled all the interviewing, crafted all the interview questions, and planned all the B-roll content capture and shot list. They handled all the interviewing on the day of the shoot, as well as the video capture, sound, and audio. We shot in a research lab and conference rooms. Signature Video Group provided all the lighting and video equipment.

They’ve supported the creation of French-language versions. We’ve provided them with the translation, but they’ve layered in new text on screen for French and French subtitles. The interviews were all done in English; we just subtitled everything.

Signature Video Group has done full-scale editing, motion graphics, and text on screen. They did the first cut. We spoke about the story of the video after we had done the interviews. We chatted throughout the day about the direction we were thinking, and they put the whole piece together.

They’ve also created a 15-second ad for us that we use to promote the video’s overall purpose. The secondary purpose of the video is to profile the clinical trial and promote a new website we launched that helps people find clinical trials. Signature Video Group has made a paid media ad that we use online to help people find clinical trials.

One of my former staff members from a previous job was hired at Signature Video Group. I knew that when we needed a video production team, I could reach out to her. She was a great producer.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

This is our first real push to do a long-form video, and the internal reception has been great. We’ve featured the video on our social channels and in internal town halls. Our fundraising and corporate partnerships teams have shared the video with donor communications. We’ve also used the video for informational purposes on our website around the importance of taking and learning about clinical trials. Overall, the usage success has been really high.

How did Signature Video Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They meet deadlines and stay on budget. We use Trello for project management. We communicate via email and Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciate their level of collaboration. They’ve really conversed with us around the storyline for the video, understanding the storytellers, the production, and the vision we had for the project. I’ve been impressed with the cinematic story and the way they’ve produced the story with really high quality. They’ve provided it with a narrative and cinematic edge that’s not traditional in the content we’ve normally done.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, we’re happy with everything. We plan to do more projects with them in the future.

The more information you can provide them about the subject matter, the purpose of the project, and the audience it’s for, the better. The greater creative landscape you can give them, the better. The more information they have about the interview subjects and the more opportunities they have to shoot B-roll in different locations, the better.

We successfully recorded a session with a big client of ours after we gave them 10 days notice of the project due to that client becoming available. They moved projects round to accommodate our request and produced a phenomenal asset.

I’m the chief external relations officer of Breakthrough T1D, a nonprofit. We fund research into type 1 diabetes. I oversee the marketing and communications department and the government relations and advocacy department.

We were rebranding, so we needed a new brand video to explain to our stakeholders our new brand, why we changed, what we stood for, our mission, and our purpose.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Signature Video Group produced a brand video for us that we used to launch our brand. We had a full-day shoot with them. They worked on making sure our scripts were good and developed questions that we could ask the people that we had as part of the video. Signature Video Group helped on the logistical and creative sides in terms of how to storyboard it out, editing, and all the postproduction. They also asked all the questions and guided all the people that were part of the video. The team handled editing and audio mixing.

We did an RFP to different production companies based on the services they offered, the reviews we read, and their work with another nonprofit. We liked the style of the videos they had produced for other organizations, which was similar to what we were looking for. The video has been published on our YouTube channel, linked on our website, and through email and social media. We’ve seen an increase in views, clicks, and shares. The feedback has been very positive. All of our staff, board, and other stakeholders really thought the video was powerful and inspiring and offered hope to the community.

How did Signature Video Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They were excellent at project management. They kept everything moving and were flexible when things came up. They were always on time and kept in contact with us to keep us updated on how things were progressing. They replied very quickly to any questions we had. We typically communicated via Microsoft Teams and email.

Samantha and Chris were both great. They made everybody involved in the video feel very comfortable and at ease because not everybody had been on camera before. Samantha and Chris were easy and good to work with and helped everybody through the process.

They really understood what we wanted out of this project and how we could leverage members of our community in the best way and get those impactful soundbites out of them when we were filming.

I’m the creative manager at Mabel’s Labels. We make custom peel-and-stick labels for kids; they can put the labels on their items and gear when they go to daycare or do sports and activities.

What challenge were you trying to address with Signature Video Group?

We were putting out ads for TV and some streaming apps. Given that, our team wanted to produce something of higher quality than what we could create in-house. As a result, we engaged Signature Video Group to help us. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially discussed what we envisioned and what we wanted to emulate with our brand in terms of ad style. From there, our team and Signature Video Group had back-and-forth conversations around budget and deliverables. After agreeing on the project’s cost, we had another meeting to discuss the vision and specifics of the ads. 

Their team put together a storyboard for us and created the messaging based on our directions. We locked in the plan and location and had some conversations about the talent. The filming day happened in April 2024, and it was a 12-hour day.

After the filming day, we wrapped up the set, and they did the edits. About three weeks later, they sent us some cuts to review. We saw the first edits, and they gave us two options for the ending. From there, we finalized the payment and paid our final bill. They sent the folder with the assets and everything we needed.

Chris (Founder & Creative Director) was involved in the project from start to finish and was present on the day of filming. Meanwhile, Samantha (Senior Account Manager) coordinated everything, and Rachel (Producer) handled the follow-up processes and postproduction. A camera operator, a sound specialist, and a production assistant also worked with us.

We found Signature Video Group on Google and were pleased with the examples on their website. I reached out to them for a free consultation to know if our project was a good fit for their services. 

Then, I had a Zoom call with Chris and Samantha and knew they’d researched our brand. Chris used our products for his kids. I could also tell they asked around about our company and reputation, so they understood who we were. As a result, it was an easy decision to hire them.

The quality of Signature Video Group’s work was fantastic. The video quality was great, and the camera work and editing were excellent. 

How did Signature Video Group perform from a project management standpoint?

The team was prompt. For instance, I tried to come to the location early on the filming day with some coffee and snacks, but they showed up even earlier and were already set up by the time I showed up. They were wonderful to work with and created a positive environment for us.

Moreover, their teammates were open to feedback. My feedback had something to do with how our product was being shown or used, but they were experts in their respective fields. To communicate, we used emails and Zoom calls.

The entire team was fantastic. We were happy with Chris and his vision and understanding of our brand. Meanwhile, Samantha was so attentive and quick to get back at us. I'm the VP of business development at a medical device design and development company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Signature Video Group?

We needed to create a launch product video for a medical device that my company was building. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Signature Video Group produced a 90-second launch video, and the entire process took around  30 days. In the beginning, we had 2–3 calls with the team to discuss our product, our target audience, and my thought process regarding what the video should look like. On the second call with Signature Video Group, we discussed the team's thoughts and reviewed the work they had put together. We went through the pieces the team came up with, describing what would be suitable for the video. 

On our third call with Signature Video Group, the team presented a script on paper stating the video's dialogues and how the story should be laid out. The team allowed me to make changes throughout the process. About ten days after we started the project, the script was confirmed, and Signature Video Group produced the actual video. 

The video involved in-house voiceover, and the team hired a professional person to do it. Once the video was filmed, I could request a couple of changes. Signature Video Group managed the video process from start to finish, including filming and sound and image edition,

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We presented the video created by Signature Video Group to around 40 people, including our team's executives and persons from our target audience. We could see how the audience's faces lit up when watching the video. The audience was full of very important people who understood exactly the story we were trying to tell and were quite impressed by the final product. 

Signature Video Group's work was top-notch. I didn't request many changes to the final video because their work was excellent. The script and video were perfectly created by the team were perfect, and we found a partner to engage with the next time we require video production services. Signature Video Group's quality was fantastic.

How did Signature Video Group perform from a project management standpoint?

We had agreed on a set price from the beginning of the project, and the team stayed on budget. Signature Video Group completed the project 6-7 days ahead of schedule, and all our communication was via Zoom meetings.

All of the team was fantastic. Samantha did a great job at coordinating tasks. Chris and Rachel helped design the video's story, doing a great job at laying out a story about our medical device. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was mostly impressed by how Signature Video Group laid out the storyline and their ability to put together a story for a complicated product. The team's ability to simplify and create the story was what impressed me the most.

All of our project's expectations were received, and I was happy with Signature Video Group's work. The team did everything I asked them to.

When engaging with a service provider, it's our responsibility as a client to dedicate the same time and effort as the team. If we do that, the final product will be fantastic.

I work as an innovation, communications, and public affairs manager for Ontario Genomics, a government-funded nonprofit. The government funds us, and we give that money to researchers and startups who use genomics and biotechnology in the healthcare, food, and agriculture industries.

What challenge were you trying to address with Signature Video Group?

One of the programs we work on is Bio Create, a startup accelerator program on which we give $150,000 and 18 months of mentorship to selected companies to scale up their products and get them to market faster. I needed Signature Video Group to create a promotional video to explain our program.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Signature Video Group has produced an inspiring two-minute promotional video to give viewers a general idea of our program. We want to put this video on our website, use it for social media, show it to the government, and play it at conferences.

What is the team composition?

I've been working with three teammates from Signature Video Group, including Samatha (Senior Account Manager), who has worked directly with me, Chris (Founder & Creative Director), and Rachel (Producer), who has been on the group calls, although I don't work directly with her.

How did you come to work with Signature Video Group?

I found Signature Video Group on Clutch. Initially, I reached out to a creative company that works with nonprofits, but they told me that they were booked and didn't have the capacity to take on a new client, so they suggested going to Clutch, where I found them.

As an organization, I had to do due diligence and look for multiple potential service providers to choose the one I felt was the best fit. Additionally, we didn't have a lot of money to spend. Our Bio Create program was funded by both the provincial and federal governments, so we had to be very cautious about how we would spend the money.

I needed to ensure that the service provided we hired would offer the biggest value for the money and act as a legitimate creative partner. Throughout this process, I went through five different companies and settled with Signature Video Group, as they were great to deal with and just great people overall.

During the initial call, the team made time to answer my questions, which were more questions than average, considering my journalistic background. Still, they were very patient with me. Additionally, they met our budget, which I want to make very clear. Although it seemed that they tend to work on bigger projects, they weren't disappointed that we only had $15,000 CAD (approximately $11,000 USD) to work with.

Still, the reason why we went with them was because they had a great sense of aesthetics. When other creative companies work with nonprofits, their work is very cookie-cutter-made. It all seems the same, and nothing seems to have a particular inspiration or a different story to tell.

Signature Video Group had a cinematic setting, which would lend a lot of weight and credibility to the project and the program we were working on. I didn't want this video to look like any other promotional video from other nonprofits, so it was important for me to achieve a certain taste and quality level.

I was really thrilled with what Signature Video Group showed us as examples of their work. They had worked with an accelerator program before, so they showed us the promotional videos they had done for that company. Although that company had a lot more money than us, those videos definitely inspired us.

Something that was really important during this process was that Signature Video Group, as a creative company, presented possibilities and visions to us that we hadn't thought of before. A lot of the videos that they showed us helped me see the possibilities that were available for us regarding storytelling.

What is the status of this engagement?

I first reached out to them around July 2023, and our engagement is ongoing. The video was launched in November 2023. Now, I want them to do another video for us in 2024.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We're a social-media-user-oriented organization. When the video was released, it was incredibly well-received by our followers. We've also played it at a launch event and at Queen's Park during our provincial legislator's lecture, as well as in other events. The video is also on our website.

Unfortunately, we haven't had anyone to push it, so I can't provide compelling metrics on clicks or views. We're going to put someone in place to promote the video shortly because it would be great to have someone to help us push this video while we work on the second video this year.

That said, everyone internally has been thrilled with the video. Our organization doesn't have a communications team, so the concept, execution, and style of this video have been incredibly different from what we're used to doing. Given my journalistic background, I'm trying to make products that appeal to a wider audience, not just academia. Therefore, this video has been completely different from anything my organization has ever put out. Still, they're very thrilled.

The video is beautiful, including its sound, which was impeccable. I used to work on the radio, so I'm very aware of sounds and music. The sound that Signature Video Group has used in this video is really special and emotive. Moreover, I love the visuals. Due to our budget, the team obviously had to use a lot of stock footage to meet our budget, which was fine. Everything they used was excellent.

We did have some issues with the voiceover artist, but Signature Video Group was really accommodating and definitely patient with me. They even had the voiceover artist re-record, and I was part of that live recording process so that I could hear everything and make adjustments in real-time.

I really appreciate Signature Video Group's patience with me during that process. They went above and beyond to ensure that the audio was what I wanted it to be.

How did Signature Video Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Signature Video Group has definitely met the deadlines. The deadlines have actually come quicker than initially anticipated because our CEO was speaking at a conference in Ottowa, so we wanted to have the video ready for that conference. Still, the team has adjusted on the fly and has been able to deliver the video sooner than anticipated. They respond quickly, for sure.

Moreover, I've never felt that, considering our budget, they just wanted to finish the project and get us out of the way, which was very important for us. As for communication, we usually use email. We also have group Zoom calls, during which they show me videos as examples of things to give me some ideas. I really like our Zoom calls because we communicate with the whole team, so we can hear everyone's perspective.

To date, our communication is very good — not too much or too little. They keep reaching out every few months to see how things are going.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Although I deal with Samantha the most, the entire team has been wonderful. For example, I just had a call with Chris last week about doing another video this year, and the three of them were on that call. The entire team is really great, and they offer a lot.

Something that I really like about them, which has to do with the general vibe of Signature Video Group, is that they're very collaborative, and it never feels like a hard sell. They provide suggestions, and if we're not into those, they quickly move on; there's no pushback, which makes things feel organic and friendly.

I've worked with other creative companies in the past, and there's always an edge to them; they seem to be impatient. Working with Signature Video Group, I've never felt that. They're very patient and respectful of boundaries, and that's always the case with the three of their members working with us.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about Signature Video Group is their vibe. Although their technical talent is obviously there, what I like the most is that I feel comfortable working with them. I've never experienced any drama or felt any negativity because they don't use negative language. They're good people who do good work and in whom I trust; that's the kind of people I want to work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything Signature Video Group could improve on.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Be honest, and don't be worried about hurting people's feelings; this is their job. Tell them what you're looking for, and don't be afraid to tell them if you don't know it yet. In fact, during my initial conversations with them, I gave them a general idea of what we wanted but told them that I was looking for a creative company to do the rest.

We initially hired Signature Video Group to take headshots and B-roll.

In addition to taking headshots and B-roll, they have been responsible for creating videos we use on our website and video content for our portfolio companies. The latest project we’re collaborating on is an effort to raise capital; Signature Video Group’s team is capturing video content and various interviews to create footage. The video is heavily targeted towards our investor audience, and the service provider has been responsible for all aspects of the project, including conducting remote interviews. 
We’re also working on a few video intros for our annual general meeting.

Their quality of work is very high, and they always ensure that everything accurately reflects our brand.

Despite tight deadlines, they have been extremely accommodating, and their team ensures that everything runs smoothly. If there has ever been any issue with the budget, they work with us to make sure that we’re getting everything sorted.

Chris brings a strong background and expertise from a PR standpoint, and we appreciate how he has such a knack for pulling together the sound and video content. Rachel, our producer, brings a creative vision to everything and is lovely to work with.

They’ve taken the time to understand what we need, which we really appreciate. Signature Video Group also understands the importance of humanizing a brand and how storytelling can impact that. Signature Video Group provided video production and editing services. The team did a one-day shoot at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto for an Amazon technology product. In terms of the process, they took care of preproduction, including scouting to hire talent.

The end products were multiple deliverables: two 90-minute videos for YouTube and other 30-second-long clips for social media platforms.
