It was handled by them exclusively--they proactively proposed timelines, estimates of labor hours, workplans, order of operations for tackling the multiple components of the redesign, and proactively communicated anything that needed to change. They also checked in frequently to make sure we were happy, and provided guidance on ideas we had (to make sure they were feasible or not). They used google hangouts and email primarily, with some invision use for design, and a dev server on our own web domain so we could privately see the proposed changes before pushing to development.
