We’ve been established since 1955. Our company started off as two separate print directories for all the company information of various foreign and domestic companies. We migrated from there to CDs, and from CDs to a website. On the prior website we had, we had two separate databases.

One of the big challenges was that we needed to move to a more functional database and website. We wanted to merge those two directories into one searching feature and allow for additional data pieces to be put into existing and new data sets.

Cheeky Monkey Media did everything. They created the new website for us and helped us figure out what would work best for us and our clients. They really listened to what we needed to have done.

Our EVP of Product Development found them for us. He told us that Cheeky Monkey Media was very experienced with Drupal which was what we wanted. We felt that they would be the best ones for it, especially with all the moving parts of the project.

We are still working with them now.

The consistent feedback we’ve gotten is that people really like the look and functionality of it. They like the ease of use thanks to the migration of those two databases together into one platform.

How did Cheeky Monkey Media perform from a project management standpoint?

You always have some bumps on the road, but when we did have those bumps, they were resolved in a very calm fashion - a testament to their capabilities. A lot of the technical things had already been done when I came on board six months into the project. They took the time to patiently walk me through the project. I ask a ton of questions, and they are always very willing to take the time to help me fully understand.

We had challenges with the size of what we needed to have done because there was so much data and a specific way we needed to have it move. One of the biggest challenges was getting the reporting times of the downloads of data to be within the numbers that we needed them to be in. That was challenging for them, but we did get there.

Cheeky Monkey Media is a really great group to work with. We’ve exchanged calls and emails and because of the time difference, they’ve gotten up early in the morning to accommodate me. Even if I send an urgent email on the weekend, I’ll get a response, which is fantastic. I’ve never worked with another company like this before.

At the moment, we’re good. It was very challenging when we were trying to meet a number of deadlines and get everything in place because of the time difference. That being said, we knew that going into it. There haven’t been any surprises, which is very helpful.

I needed help with SEO [search engine optimization] and the design of my site. When brides and couples are looking at a wedding planning site, it has to be a beautiful experience.

I was looking for someone who could take care of all my SEO and design needs because brides and couples are going to a wedding planner site and making decisions based in part on the design of the site. They're looking for pictures, authenticity, and that it truly reflects the planner themselves rather than just being a site. I went for them to just do it so that I didn't have to be held accountable, more to hold someone else accountable.

It's a little bit too soon to tell as of right now since I got the site a week and a half ago. I haven't really had the opportunity to see that growth yet.

They were fantastic. They use Basecamp, which allows me to log into the project itself. They update me frequently and are very responsive when I ask questions. There was no delay in communication and if they didn't have the answers, they would find them for me.

The Cheeky Monkey Media team member's personalities stood out to me. They are great people outside of what they do. They're very genuine and easy to talk to. I found that I was able to communicate or felt like I could communicate what I was after, and they understood me. That authenticity on their end was so incredibly helpful.

I wouldn't say as of yet because we're still finishing the project up. It could change, but I don't think it will.

We looked at a number of different web development companies online. We were looking for an agency that was in our time zone, and it didn't take long for them to get on the short list. Cheeky Monkey had a really great website for their own company. We engaged them in a conversation, their price point was right for us, and that's how we chose them.

We have a contract that estimates that we're going to spend just over $50,000 a year with them, but we've also done special projects that altogether cost another $50,000 this year.

So far, we've seen lots of benefits. Since beginning to work with Cheeky Monkey, we have been able to resolve a long list of projects that were outstanding, which we didn't have any way to get done. Unfortunately, we still have a long list of new things that people want, but it is comforting to have Cheeky Monkey as our partner when work piles up.

They're doing very well. We've been doing some special projects on top of our regular ones, but they've brought additional staff to help with that. We're continuing to make good progress and I'm very happy with the services they've provided.

Cheeky Monkey Media is very connected to the Drupal community and the actual Drupal software itself. They actually produced the Drupal convention website and signage, and some other things this year. That connection keeps them abreast of all the changes in the Drupal content management system. That was very helpful to us because we had adopted Drupal as our content management system as well.

I really don't know what it would be, unless they started reading my mind, and sometimes I'm wondering if they're doing that.

The work that we did with Cheeky Monkey was for a company called Inside Track Canada. We're an online car brokerage organization where you can purchase any make or model of a vehicle through our website.

We needed somebody that could look at legacy feeds from each one of the automotive manufacturers and convert it into Drupal code so that people could configure multiple vehicles at the same time.

They helped us improve the look and feel of the site. They took our existing logos and fonts and updated the look. The biggest thing they did was provide us with the necessary Drupal code we needed.

We were terminating a contract with our existing partner at the time and looking for an alternative. We just starting Googling, found Cheeky Monkey, interviewed them, and decided to give them a try. They delivered and stepped up to the plate.

We were looking for some very experienced programmers and people that understood what we wanted to accomplish at the end of the day. We had actually tried three other companies before we found Cheeky Monkey. Cheeky Monkey was the only company that could do it.

How did Cheeky Monkey Media perform from a project management standpoint?

Cheeky Monkey's strength is project management, in my opinion, as well as business acumen. Because they were able to look at this very complex project and slice and dice it into the appropriate buckets, we had a much better experience as compared to all of the other companies that I have dealt with in the past. They made a huge process very easy to understand and therein complete.

What distinguishes Cheeky Monkey Media from other providers?

The way Cheeky Monkey Media was able to brand our company was great. It was great that they had designers that were brought onto the project and that they did a whole style guide upfront. It was storyboarded with the style guide, and then they started coding. Because they broke this project up into pieces, we didn't have to go back and change anything. There are no surprises during the project.

We had a few difficulties with communication in the beginning. Rather than speaking only to the project manager, they would have us talking with the programmers. This made things a bit more complicated than they needed to be. They have since rectified this, so we're happy.

Neither of us was here when they initially approached Cheeky Monkey to work with the organization. Our organization needed a redesign of our website who knew how to use Drupal.

They helped redesign our Drupal website. Another challenge was that the previous site was not mobile optimized and did not have any Spanish language functionality or pages to it. Part of the redesign was to make the site mobile-friendly and to provide all of our resources and information in Spanish.

The organization's biggest requirement was that the agency we decided to work with needed to have considerable experience working with Drupal.

The first project for the redesign was a $200,000 project. Since then, we've had smaller projects that have been less than $100,000.

In general, our audience has expanded, and we have had a lot of traffic on some of our more specific pages. It was because of that new design and being able to access the information on a mobile device that that increase happened.

When I first started working with Cheeky Monkey, they were going through a transition, so things were a little slow moving and communication was a bit off, but once they switched to a new project manager everything improved. Our project manager Justin has been great at paying attention to our needs and the projects. More recently, they've been getting busy, so it's been a little bit more of a slower pace again.

It is very clear that Cheeky Monkey Media has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Drupal.

Is there anything Cheeky Monkey Media could have improved or done differently?

The only thing that has been a little frustrating is not being able to move forward with projects because of timing. I know they are getting a lot of new business, so it is probably difficult to manage timing. Aside from scheduling, they do good work.

I would also appreciate more insight from them into some of the new things that they're doing. We're moving forward on our projects, but it would be great to be more collaborative in terms of how we could improve our site and getting that feedback from them. I'm more used to having a more collaborative relationship with vendors where they're constantly providing ideas.

The business challenge was that we have slowly been converting our proprietary content management system based websites over to open source content management systems. Our previous hosting provider built our websites on the Microsoft platform. We felt that that was what was affecting the performance of our website.

SOLUTION

Cheeky Monkey Media worked to move us onto the hosting provider Pantheon. They seem to have extensive knowledge regarding that. We reached out to Cheeky Monkey who first did an audit on our website and discovered some of the issues that were preventing us from having optimal performance. One of those issues was because the website was on a less than optimal platform, which is typically supposed to be running on an Apache UNIX. Our platform instead was built on Microsoft. They helped us convert it from Microsoft over to UNIX, and also moved us over onto Pantheon’s hosting services, and as a result, have been doing well ever since. In addition to moving two of our main websites over to Pantheon, they’ve also built a brand new website for us since we’ve known them.

I searched online for the top design agencies who have experience with Drupal and came up with Cheeky Monkey Media. We saw their past work with Drupal and could tell they were very active within that community, which is exactly what we were looking for.

It costs on average, $25,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We are currently working with them. After they did the initial work we asked for, we realized that we needed a middle man. We have them on retainer as application level support that Pantheon can’t provide.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Before we partnered with Cheeky Monkey our websites were really slow. The sites were slow for the anonymous users that are just coming to the website to read and visit pages, but they were dreadfully slow for the logged in users who are content managers of the website. Since we’ve moved on to Pantheon and converted away from Microsoft, there has been a dramatic improvement on our performance. We see at least 50 to 75% quicker load times of our pages.

We have had a huge increase in traffic. We’re seeing almost 20,000 extra users on average per month ever since we moved from a Microsoft-based environment to a UNIX-based environment.

How did Cheeky Monkey Media perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management is very good and organized. They break all their tasks up to make sure everything gets done. If we have any projects, we speak to their account manager who then looks into the project and gives us a quote and time frame. From that point forward, I work with a single person who delegates to their designers and programmers. I like that we only work with one person and that they have been consistent because they know everything about my past projects. It makes it quicker to not have to explain so much every single time I get a new project to a new person.

What distinguishes Cheeky Monkey Media from other providers?

The team at Cheeky Monkey Media is a fun group of people and are pleasant to work with. If the project is something that’s out of scope or really difficult, they’re great at explaining why it can’t be done. If it can be done, but will cost more, they are fair and upfront about it.

My experience with them has been pretty great. We don’t have a full technical staff that can continue development and management of our websites on our hosting platform – so it is nice to have Cheeky Monkey.

Costs are pretty fair and definitely worthwhile. We’re a nonprofit, so we can always use bigger discounts on certain things. Overall, we are happy.

They’ve been amazing. I’ve never been so pleased. I worked with another web designer before we started working with Cheeky Monkey, and I was always frustrated with the first company. Whenever I need something from Cheeky Monkey, their response is amazing. They have everything in order, organized on an Excel spreadsheet that is presented to us in a weekly meeting. As items are completed, they drop to the bottom of the spreadsheet; those that are up and coming are at the top. We’re never surprised by what’s happening. Everything is always well thought-out.

I’ve been to Cheeky Monkey's office, which is very warm and inviting. They’re all knowledgeable and extremely friendly, but always professional. They get back to me right away when I have an issue and are just great people.
