BACKGROUND
I’m the former CTO of a financial services company catering to underbanked customers in the U.S. Because our customers didn't fit the usual financial/banking model, we provided alternatives to loans and credit cards. I oversaw operations related to IT, software development, and data services as well as recruiting in a competitive market.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
Building our own system to manage customers’ accounts was a huge priority. Since many banks considered our customers to be higher-risk, few of the typical credit score services or applications met our needs, so we started to build our own platform for originating, underwriting, and servicing debt.
We had been using off-the-shelf software that couldn’t handle the volume of business we had. As a result, money was getting lost in the system.
