Further, there was never any question that was too big or too small for Blake. I appreciated that 5–6 years after the project, I could still talk to him. We couldn’t talk to the founders of other companies. Blake, on the other hand, was extremely personable. We never felt that he was removed from us in any way. He was also always hands-on with his team, so that made us feel good — we were collaborating with a good team.

From a project management perspective, I think they’ve done really well. We took a risk with Shopify, because there’s not a lot of enterprise sites built on that platform. To that end, for them to create what they did required a lot of creativity and custom code that we weren’t expecting. They were able to write custom code and make the site work the way we wanted it to work. The price we paid them was fixed bid, and they didn’t once ask for more even though they had to write a lot of unexpected custom code. So, I really respect them for that.

From a project management perspective, there weren’t any issues on their end. I think a lot of the lags came on our end. We had a lot of content to generate going back 60-plus years. On their end, they were pretty good when it came to meeting our deadlines. They kept us on track plenty of times. So, it was never an issue. It happened on time. As far as their responsiveness goes, I liked working with them. It’s one of those cases where you work on a project with someone for a few months, and they become part of your life. They worked late, and they were available to work on weekends if needed.

The work for the 50+ websites was scheduled for 24 months, and we accelerated it into 15 months. On the search side, Philly Marketing Labs has done really well. Over five years, the metrics have improved. We had a joke that the metrics couldn’t get any better than what they were. I’d tell Philly Marketing Labs to make them better anyway, and they did. Philly Marketing Labs is very proactive. They successfully manage 50 websites with a lot of brand managers who have other priorities. They’d often find an issue or opportunity long before we’d be aware of it. Project management is good, I’m sure they use a tool behind the scenes but our team didn’t have the attention for it. Making our lives easy was one of their goals and they did that. Philly Marketing Labs is extremely responsive and collaborative. They’re great at collaborating with our other partners and agencies, even when some of those companies weren’t so communicative.

Because it’s not just an individual, they have a pretty wide internal repository of knowledge. Different people that focus on different parts of the business, and have different skills. We’ve never presented them with a question they couldn’t answer. They have people that are familiar with different integrations and different systems, API experts, integration database experts, and then general business experts, then the nuts and bolts of Drupal and the do’s and don’ts. Whatever problems we're facing, there’s typically someone that has experienced a solution in the past to draw upon.
